HCMC: From a Startup Cradle to a Leading Service Metropolis

As Vietnam’s most dynamic economic hub, Ho Chi Minh City is demonstrating a strategic transition: from “nurturing” a startup ecosystem to “transforming” into a pioneering service-oriented city and continuously “adapting” to the context of globalization.

The city is currently focused on developing key economic sectors such as the digital economy, finance, logistics, and high-quality education and healthcare. To date, the number of private enterprises in HCMC accounts for about 30% of the country’s total, with many of these businesses acting as “leading engines” driving the national economy. The city is also the birthplace of 3 out of Vietnam’s 4 tech “unicorns,” namely VNG, MoMo, and Sky Mavis.

One of the key driving forces for the startup ecosystem in HCMC is the Business Startup Support Centre (BSSC). By connecting investors, support organizations, and young entrepreneurs, BSSC has contributed to building a sustainable development environment for innovative enterprises right from their early stages.

HCMC aims to become a regional economic and financial hub by 2030, serving as the growth engine for the entire country. However, to achieve this, the city needs to continue resolving bottlenecks in infrastructure, human resources, administrative reform, and strengthening regional linkages.
